McCarthy & Stone is Britain’s leading provider of retirement accommodation. We have been pioneers in this field since the 1970s and our name is now synonymous with retirement at its most rewarding.
Milestones in our history
We built our first retirement apartments in New Milton, Hampshire, in 1977. Today, we provide the largest share of the UK’s owner occupied Retirement Living and Assisted Living accommodation. We’ve built more than 51,000 individual apartments in 1,100 different developments nationwide.
In 1984 we achieved a full listing on the London Stock Exchange. Although the 1990s recession had an impact, we continued to grow in the years that followed it.
In 2006, the Company was de-listed from the Stock Exchange and taken private by a consortium led by Halifax Bank of Scotland. Through the creation of five regional offices, supported by our Head Office in Bournemouth, we now have a presence nationwide. In 2009, the McCarthy & Stone business was transformed into a new corporate structure by its senior leaders enabling the Company to look forward with great confidence to the future.
Expanding our portfolio of services
As the needs of our homeowners changed, we began to develop new services for retirement that complement and build on our core property development activity.
Management and support services
In 2010 we decided to provide our own management and support services in all new developments. McCarthy & Stone Management Services takes care of estate maintenance and provides support to homeowners across our new developments.
Since 2010, in all our new Assisted Living developments we now provide a range of flexible care and support services in partnership with Somerset Care Group, a large and very experienced not-for-profit care operation. We call it YourLife Management Services.
