Our History

Our history - the retirement living pioneers 

McCarthy Stone is the UK's leading developer and manager of retirement communities. As pioneers in retirement properties, our name is now synonymous with retirement living at its best.

2022

Today we manage 475 retirement communities and support c.20,000 older people around the country, providing a range of property maintenance, care and support services. We are proud that we make a phenomenal difference to the lives of our customers and the communities in which they live.

2021

We built, sold and rented c.1,100 new properties this year as the country emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic.  A third of our transactions were for rentals as we focussed on providing a more flexible choice of tenures for our customers. We also launched a new development partnership with Anchor, creating several ‘affordable for all’ retirement villages around the county.

2020

The business focused on keeping our customers safe and well during the pandemic. Infection within our communities was just a quarter of that of  older people in wider society. Chiltern Place in Amersham, Buckinghamshire won Best Retirement Development. We also received a Highly Commended for Best Community Initiative for our work during the pandemic, as well as a Special Recognition Award for our response to Covid-19. We launched a charitable foundation aimed at supporting older people in society.

2019

We successfully trialled new multi tenure options including rental and shared ownership to offer our customers more flexibility and choice. YourLife Management Services was brought fully in-house, giving us full control over the support services we offer. 2,301 properties were sold or rented this year.

2018

We were pleased to receive the full Five Star rating in the HBF’s customer satisfaction survey. John Tonkiss, our new CEO announces our new strategy. It is based on our purpose of supporting older people and their families, with the long term vision of deepening our relationship with our customers. Horizons, in Poole won Best Retirement Development. We built and sold 2,134 new properties this year.

2017

Employees raised £260k for our charity of the year, the Royal Voluntary Service. We built and sold 2,302 new properties this year.

2016

Our Ramsay Grange and Lyle Court development in Edinburgh won Best Retirement Development of the year and we also won the Best Customer Satisfaction award to recognise our ongoing Five Star customer service for our homeowners. We built and sold 2,299 new properties this year.  

Scarlett Oak - McCarthy Stone

2015

We were pleased to receive the full Five Star rating in the HBF’s customer satisfaction survey. Scarlet Oak in Solihull won Best Retirement Development. We re-joined the main market of the London Stock Exchange, and built and sold 1,923 new properties this year.  

Kirby Lonsdale

2014

Queen Elizabeth Court in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, was named Best Retirement Development. We built and sold 1,677 new properties this year.

2013

We won two awards at the Fifty Plus awards for Best Fifty Plus Housing Provider and Best Fifty Plus Retirement Living Plus (formerly known as Assisted Living) Housing Provider. We built and sold 1,527 new properties this year.

2012/2011

We grew our new management services business quickly in the first two years, building and selling 1,264 and 1,370 new properties in 2011 and 2012 respectively.  

Our history - McCarthy Stone

2010

We brought the management of our developments in-house, establishing McCarthy Stone Management Services to manage our Retirement Living schemes, and YourLife Management Services to run our Retirement Living PLUS schemes. One of our first managed developments is Cherrett Court in Dorset. We remain the landlord on all new schemes built from this point, and all new developments are fully maintained and operated by us.
