Our history - the retirement living pioneers
McCarthy Stone is the UK's leading developer and manager of retirement communities. As pioneers in retirement properties, our name is now synonymous with retirement living at its best.
Today we manage 475 retirement communities and support c.20,000 older people around the country, providing a range of property maintenance, care and support services. We are proud that we make a phenomenal difference to the lives of our customers and the communities in which they live.
We built, sold and rented c.1,100 new properties this year as the country emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic. A third of our transactions were for rentals as we focussed on providing a more flexible choice of tenures for our customers. We also launched a new development partnership with Anchor, creating several ‘affordable for all’ retirement villages around the county.
The business focused on keeping our customers safe and well during the pandemic. Infection within our communities was just a quarter of that of older people in wider society. Chiltern Place in Amersham, Buckinghamshire won Best Retirement Development. We also received a Highly Commended for Best Community Initiative for our work during the pandemic, as well as a Special Recognition Award for our response to Covid-19. We launched a charitable foundation aimed at supporting older people in society.
We successfully trialled new multi tenure options including rental and shared ownership to offer our customers more flexibility and choice. YourLife Management Services was brought fully in-house, giving us full control over the support services we offer. 2,301 properties were sold or rented this year.
We were pleased to receive the full Five Star rating in the HBF’s customer satisfaction survey. John Tonkiss, our new CEO announces our new strategy. It is based on our purpose of supporting older people and their families, with the long term vision of deepening our relationship with our customers. We grew our new management services business quickly in the first two years, building and selling 1,264 and 1,370 new properties in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
We brought the management of our developments in-house, establishing McCarthy Stone Management Services to manage our Retirement Living schemes, and YourLife Management Services to run our Retirement Living PLUS schemes. One of our first managed developments is Cherrett Court in Dorset. We remain the landlord on all new schemes built from this point, and all new developments are fully maintained and operated by us.
