Things to do in Southampton

Renowned for its maritime and military history, and packed with culture, sports and shopping, Southampton is an ideal location for a retirement property by the sea. Our retirement properties in Southampton are close to all of the attractions this famous port city has to offer, so you can easily explore the sights or relax on the local beaches. Attractions include St Michaels Square in the heart of the old town, home to Tudor House museum and Garden, and English Heritage’s Netley Abbey. There are plenty of museums too, including the Sea City museum, Solent Sky museum and National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.

The vibrant city centre is packed with an abundance of restaurants, coffee shops, shopping and entertainment. Oxford Street is the home of independent shops and dining. Then there’s the all-encompassing Westquay shopping centre and Ocean Village where you can enjoy a delicious meal or drink overlooking the marina. The town hosts plentiful annual events to enjoy, including Southampton Mayflower Maritime Festival and Southampton International Film Festival. The New Forest is also close by - fantastic for long walks and wildlife spotting.

The city is a major hub for international cruising, so makes the perfect base for luxurious holidays and adventures. It is also surprisingly easy to explore the Isle of Wight. On Red Funnel ferries, it takes around 30 minutes to get to Cowes as a foot passenger, slightly longer by car.

Southampton is very accessible by road, with major links to the M3 and M27 motorways and offers a comprehensive bus service as well as a well-connected central train station.
