SIGHTS

In the bustling city centre, you’ll find plenty to see and experience. Since 1928, the Tyne Bridge has been a defining icon of Tyneside, connecting Newcastle to Gateshead across the River Tyne. The design was inspired by the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City and it took three years to build. It's also become a recognised symbol for the annual Great North Run, when 52,000 runners pass over the bridge under a display from the Red Arrows.

It’s also only a few miles from the city centre to the bays, beaches and buzzing seaside towns of the coast. There are miles of coves and cliffs to explore here, including four areas near Newcastle that were awarded the prestigious Blue Flag mark of quality. You'll also find that the ice creams and sandcastles here are a perfect excuse to bring your family up for a visit!

Whether you're looking for international brands or quirky boutiques, Newcastle has plenty of places where you can treat yourself. You'll find major department stores and over 150 stores at intu Eldon Square, or you can find vintage and hand-crafted specialist goods in the many independent stores of High Bridge.

When you fancy a night out, you can see West End shows, opera, music and ballet at the wide range of theatres and venues. These include Sage Gateshead and the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, the oldest working Victorian theatre in the world. You'll also see hundreds of trendy and traditional restaurants, cafés and pubs dotted all over Newcastle and nearby Gateshead, making our retirement properties in Newcastle an ideal location for a socially active retirement.

The Church of St. Thomas the Martyr, Newcastle

THINGS TO DO IN NEWCASTLE

Between three cathedrals, a castle and architecture that dates back to the Normans, Newcastle is an area with a deep heritage to explore. There are more than 30 museums across the Tyne and Wear region, including the Life Science Centre and the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle itself.

You can visit the remains and reconstructions of Hadrian's Wall, admire the architecture of the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, or take a tour of Newcastle Castle. Alternatively, visit the Church of St Thomas the Martyr. Dedicated to St Thomas Becket (the Archbishop of Canterbury who was famously murdered in the 12th century), this prominent landmark is believed to have been founded by one of Becket's murderers as a personal act of penance.

SURROUNDING AREAS

Further inland, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and about in the rural landscapes of the North East. There are more than 20 different golf courses in the Tyne and Wear area, including nine in Newcastle itself.

And just 20 miles away from the city, you can explore the enormous Northumberland National Park, an expanse of 400 square miles of hills and moorland. It's also home to Kielder Forest, the largest man-made area of woodland in England where you can visit the 18th century Kielder Castle and the Kielder Observatory.
