Lifestyle in Cumbria
Just 10 miles from the border with Scotland, the city of Carlisle covers 400 square miles of land, making it the largest city in England by area. The only city in the county, here you'll find more than 70 big names in the huge Lanes Shopping Centre. You can also discover a wide variety of local produce at the Market Hall, one of the last remaining Victorian covered markets in England.
Outside the city centre, you'll find the historic Carlisle Castle, a 900-year-old strategic site that was in a crucial position near the border between Scotland and England. You can explore its dark dungeons, or see hundreds of years' worth of weapons and vehicles at the Museum of Military Life. Alternatively, head to Castlerigg Stone Circle. One of the earliest megalithic structures in England, the exact purpose of the ancient construction continues to be debated.
You’ll find plenty to see and do outside of the Lake District. For example, you can visit the charming Victorian seaside resorts of Seascale, St Bees and Allonby, with their sandy beaches and coastal walks. Each of these spots also has their own thriving local community, too. This means that they’re great places to make new friends if you’re relocating for your retirement.
For a spot of culture, you can visit the Lakes Aquarium. Here you can see creatures from almost every aquatic environment in the world, such as the frogs, lizards and snakes of the tropical rainforest, the piranhas and angelfish of the Americas, or the crayfish, sticklebacks and harvest mice of the Lake District itself.
With more than a third of the county taken up by the world-famous Lake District, it should be no surprise that our retirement properties in Cumbria put you right on the doorstep of some stunning natural environments.
Cumbria is the home of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, with views from the summit stretching as far as the Irish Mourne Mountains and the Welsh Snowdonia. You can visit both the deepest and the longest lakes in the country – Wastwater and Windermere – or explore the extensive woodlands, where you can spot rare red squirrels.
Whether you can't resist the fresh air, or you just want to keep up an active retirement, there's plenty to keep you busy and fit around the county.
You can hike up challenging hills, take a walk alongside Hadrian's Wall, or enjoy a leisurely bike ride down country lanes or across off-road trails. Grizedale Forest allows you to explore at whatever pace suits you. When visiting, you can wander between the sculptures, zoom through the assault course or cycle on the dedicated trails.
You'll also find water sports, horse riding, fishing and even archery in the Lake District. Alternatively, you could take advantage of Cumbria's 30 golf courses and almost 20 different tennis clubs.
