Retire to one of the most popular tourist towns in the country

There's a reason why millions of people choose to visit Bournemouth each year. There are seven miles of beautiful coastline to explore, from the award-winning beach at Fisherman's walk to the amusements and cafés of the Bournemouth Pier.

You'll find all of your favourite brands and restaurants in the pedestrianised town centre, as well as a wide range of retro boutiques in the vintage quarter on Christchurch Road. And if you venture just beyond the town centre, you can discover a number of specialised shops and cafés in the affluent Westbourne district.

Buy a coastal retirement home in a lively cultural centre

From the ballets, operas and West End shows of the Pavilion Theatre, to the exhibitions and displays of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, there's plenty to see and do around the area.

You can explore the massive grounds at Highcliffe Castle, watch dance, comedy and orchestral performances at The Lighthouse in Poole, or see marine wildlife up close at the Bournemouth Aquarium. And as you'd expect from a coastal resort town, there are plenty of activities to keep younger family members busy when they come to visit.

Stay active in Dorset's rewarding outdoors

There are more than 2,000 acres of beautiful gardens and parks around the area, including the famous Lower, Central and Upper Gardens, which take you all the way from the seafront into the trees, shrubs and floral bedding displays of Bournemouth's public parks.

It's also a town that's a magnet for cyclists. You can take in the sunset with a leisurely ride along the promenade, or explore the surrounding countryside and its challenging hills. Or if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, there are plenty of dedicated walking trails to guide you around the area, from the coastal villages of Southbourne and Boscombe to the streams, heaths and woodlands near Meyrick Park.

Make the most of the South West coast

Beyond the town of Bournemouth itself, it's only a few miles to the nearby coastal town of Poole. You can explore Europe's largest natural harbour, relax in one of its award-winning, Blue Flag beaches, or follow its many historic heritage trails.

On the other side of Bournemouth, and just as close by, you can visit Christchurch, where you'll find the Bournemouth Aviation Museum, Christchurch Castle, and the 200-square-mile New Forest National Park.
