Local Communities - The McCarthy Stone Foundation awards £500 to Shirley Community Centre

The Shirley Community Centre is a crucial resource within the local community. It provides a welcoming facility for recreation and leisure activities, improving social welfare and life conditions as well as a place where advanced education can be taught. The charity’s goal is to help reduce loneliness, tackle mental health issues and assist everyone in the community of Shirley to live healthier and happier lives.

Pat Causon from The Shirley Community Centre, said: “We are very grateful to the McCarthy Stone Foundation for this community grant which is going to make a huge difference as we continue on our mission to help and inspire our local community. Our doors are open to anyone who wants to improve their quality of life, meet new people, get healthier, stay mentally active, volunteer or just come and relax and have a chat.  As we look ahead to the New Year, this donation is going to be a huge help towards our planned renovations, which will further improve the much-needed community hub.”

The McCarthy Stone Foundation is the independent, registered charity of the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, McCarthy Stone, which is currently building Wheatley Placeon Stratford Road in Shirley. It aims to build long-term partnerships with charities and organisations who support the wellbeing of older people, the educational needs of young people and the urban regeneration of communities by providing much-needed financial grants, volunteers, and other resources.

Graeme Marsh at the McCarthy Stone Foundation said: “We want to support grassroots organisations that really make an impact with their work. The Shirley Community Centre is such an important resource for the local community and offers them a place to connect with others and improve their lives and mental health and wellbeing through a range of activities. We hope our commitment and funding will be a boost towards the renovations, so that the charity is able to go on to help and inspire even more people in Shirley in the many years to come."
