Mary Jacob, 83, lives with her husband Jake in Solihull, West Midlands

When Mary married Jake at the age of 18, her family was horrified and refused to attend. The year was 1948, Mary was white and Jake was black, and the UK was a long way from being a multicultural society. Mary and Jake endured enormous difficulties, finding a place to live was virtually impossible, racial abuse a daily occurrence. But they worked hard and struggled on. Sixty-five years later, they are still happily married. So what advice would Mary give to her younger self...?
