Want to be “worriless” like Wendy? She recommends renting in retirement

Originally Wendy chose renting as it gave her a chance to test the lifestyle - if she didn’t like life at Milward Place, a Retirement Living community for the over 60s in Redditch, in the West Midlands, she didn’t want the bother of having to sell and start again. Fortunately, she’s found her home “suits her down to the ground,” and now, over three years later, she’s very happy to stay.

Common concerns prompted her to downsize

Like so many people, it was a change of circumstances - and her children - that led Wendy to think about downsizing. Her husband had sadly passed away and she was waiting for a hip replacement, which meant the stairs in their family home, “were getting more or less impossible”. She had decided to look for a retirement bungalow, but one of her two daughters persuaded her to look at a McCarthy & Stone retirement apartment, having seen some for sale in Studley, Warwickshire. At the time, Priory Place was still being built, so Wendy went to look around Milward Place to “get a feel for” the lifestyle instead. The rest, as they say, is history.

Renting in retirement proved reassuring

Wendy says about her reasons for renting, “I thought if I don't like it, because I've never lived like this, I've got to then resell and go through the whole thing again. So, I’ll rent it and see. I had a few qualms - I thought it was going to be noisy as it’s in the centre but it’s not at all. All my qualms were shot down.” She also loves that she doesn’t have to worry about repairs and maintenance. She doesn’t have to stress about fences blowing down or boilers breaking down. “If anything goes wrong then it’s repaired. It suits me down to the ground because I don't have any worries. I’m worriless! When I first came I felt like I was on holiday.”

The friendly community made Wendy feel welcome

“Hand on heart everybody gets on. All the people here are friends. I have a social life out of here but the community enhances it. If you want to do things you can, or if not you can stay in your apartment like you normally would. It’s the best of both worlds really.”

When asked about the activities on offer, Wendy says, “There’s coffee mornings. bingo, Fish ‘n’ Chip Fridays, film nights, a library and we’re going out for lunch next week. We have a party for everything. People suggest things and you can go along it you want”. She adds, laughing, “I see my family when I’ve got a window to fit them in”.
