Retirement Living at St Albans
Living in St Albans
Picturesque St Albans boasts 2,000 years of history and was once the site of Britain’s third largest Roman town, Verulamium. Set in Hertfordshire it is surrounded by glorious countryside and has a strong community and a thriving food and arts scene as well as many independent shops on the attractive high street.
The remains of the ancient Roman walls and theatre are essential viewing, and the Verulamium Museum explores Roman life and has some impressive mosaics on display. Just outside is Verulamium Park, a large green space that teems with wildlife.
Another significant landmark is the imposing St Albans Cathedral where Britain’s first saint, Alban, was buried over 1,700 years ago. Close by you’ll also discover England’s only surviving Medieval town belfry, St Alban’s Clock Tower.
Even the main shopping streets are comprised of quaint Medieval buildings, housing a buzzing mix of independent boutiques, big brand stores, cafes, restaurants and pubs, including Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, which can trace its history back to 793AD.
If you’re looking for an active retirement, then St Albans has it all, from hikes in the Chilterns Hills to the flat Alban Way which takes you from Cottonmill Lane to Wrestlers Bridge in Hatfield and is perfect for strollers and cyclists. Golfers can choose between the Verulam Golf Club and Batchwood Golf & Sports Centre, which also has a gym.
St Albans has a lively community with a bustling twice weekly market and numerous festivals and gatherings, like Jazz in Clarence Park, the annual Foodies Festival and Alban Day in June which celebrates the saint with 12-foot puppets.
