THE LOCAL AREA

Things to do in Halesworth, Suffolk

Originally a Roman settlement, Halesworth is packed with historic curiosities from ‘lucky’ mummified cats and a Saxon Causeway – visit the Halesworth and District Museum to find out more – to the many medieval timber framed buildings and Victorian alms houses.

Nowadays, Halesworth has a vibrant community and a foodie culture. Many of the cafés and eateries have outdoor seating on the pedestrianised Thoroughfare.

Top restaurants include the Boarding House Dining Rooms, Cleone's Italian Restaurant, Edwards and The Ancient House Bistro. There are also plenty of traditional pubs and takeaways to suit all tastes and the town has excellent independent shops including delis, bakeries, greengrocers and butchers, as well as a weekly outdoor market held in the Market Place. It prides itself on fantastic local produce from Blythburgh pork to organic vegetables.

Of course, there are plenty of other retailers selling everything you could need, including a beautiful bookshop. Halesworth has a reputation for antiques and vintage treasures – visit the matchless Blackdog Antiques housed in a beautiful Grade II listed  building and watch out for the Halesworth Antiques Street Market in the summer.

For a cultural fix head to The Cut Arts Centre which puts on theatre, live music, film screenings and exhibitions and has a dance studio and a café bar. It also hosts arts festivals including the INK Festival which celebrates new writing. Alternatively you can find contemporary art and sculpture in The Art Gallery.

Close to our retirement housing in Halesworth, you’ll find the largest millennium green in the UK. It has around 44 acres of grazing marsh and flood plains and is a haven for wildlife including owls and otters. It’s a lovely spot for a walk, has a hide and a community orchard and also hosts events and the annual Winter Lights Festival. Next door you’ll find pretty Halesworth Town Park which has walkways and a children’s play area. And if you like to hit balls while you stroll, Halesworth Golf Club is set in 200 acres of glorious countryside.
