Things to do in Dover

With iconic White Cliffs, a dramatic castle, military museums, beaches and day trips to France – there’s a lot to love about this emblematic Kent town. Its famous White Cliffs, immortalised by Vera Lyn, are without doubt a spectacular natural phenomenon made of pure white limestone, and the views from them are breath-taking. Enjoy the scenery at the vintage style Mrs Knott’s Tearoom at the National Trust’s South Foreland Lighthouse.

Elkington House is conveniently located close to the town centre. It’s just 0.7 miles to Dover Priory train station, which takes from just over an hour to connect to London St. Pancras. The nearest beach is Dover Beach, just one mile away. The area surrounding Dover features some of the most stunning coastline England has to offer, including the South Foreland Heritage Coast, and the Dover-Folkestone Heritage Coast. Kent Downs AONB also stretches to the fringes of Dover.

Dover has plenty of local amenities including supermarkets, banks, a shopping centre, restaurants and takeaways, and the local park. Connaught Park is a large open space, with mature trees and open grassy spaces. If you enjoy a round of golf, there are several clubs nearby including the Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club known as ‘The Club on the Cliffs’. You’ll find swimming and fitness classes at Dover District Leisure Centre as well as events and clubs at the network of local community centres. For a fascinating day out English Heritage’s Dover Castle is a must – it has over 800 years of history from Henry II’s Great Tower to its role as a WWI Fire Command Post. Fort Burgoyne, Priory Gate and the Western Heights of Dover are also popular historic attractions in the town. Dover is extremely well connected for exploring the South East of England, London, the wider UK and the continent, with regular ferries to France.
