Summer Manor, the perfect location for Walkers

If walking is an important part of your weekly routine, then you will be spoilt for choice moving to Summer Manor, located in the Wharfedale Valley on the edge of the glorious Yorkshire Dales. The area is notorious for walkers who enjoy indulging in the stunning scenery of breathtaking landscapes, fascinating nature, stone walls and quaint villages.
A ‘Walkers are Welcome’ Village
In 2007 'Walkers are Welcome' was launched. The national movement with an aim to raise the profile of the great places to walk within the UK. Officially launched in 2014, walking enthusiasts in Burley in Wharfedale gained accreditation to the 'Walkers are Welcome' movement. The group have published three local walking guides, consisting of easy strolls from under 2 miles to those enthusiastic ramblers who can manage 11 miles. The group offers a five mile walk on the third Sunday each month and three mile walk on the first Friday of the month, meeting at Burley train station.

Burley Stepping Stones
To the side of the McCarthy Stone development at Summer Manor, as you head towards the village, is a public footpath on the left, just past the road sign ‘Ilkley Road’. This leads to Leatherbank, which runs directly to the Burley Stepping Stones. Alternatively you can commence this walk from Grange Park within the village. Popular with families, this is a 2 mile circular walk and features the beautiful stepping stones on the River Wharfe.

Sun Lane Nature Reserve

For those requiring a less strenuous walk, did you know Burley in Wharfedale has its own Nature Reserve, less than a mile away from Summer Manor. As you leave Summer Manor, turn left heading into the village, on West Terrace and then on to Main Street. Go past the car park on your right and you will see a blue building on the right (Brian Marlowe, Woodturner), take the next right. Follow Sun Lane, which leads to the stunning nature reserve.
The Twelve Apostles Stones

Those who enjoy a challenge, will enjoy this walk of 5.5 miles, from Burley Train Station or Moor Lane. This walk features stunning views across Burley in Wharfedale, Ilkley and even Menwith Hill from the highest point. The Twelve Apostles are Bronze Age stone circles when you reach the top.

Cow & Calf Heritage Walk
This 7.3 miles walk has stunning views across the Wharfe Valley to Askwith, Denton and Beamsley Moors. This walk commences from the beautiful glass building central to the village, the Roundhouse in Grange Park and it will take you past the hamlet of Stead and across Ben Rhydding Golf course. The Cow and Calf Rocks, compose of millstone grit, consisting of one large and one small rock, hence the name. A quarry exists behind these rocks, popular with climbers.
