Southampton couple are the second generation to reach their platinum anniversary

A couple from Folland Court, a McCarthy Stone Retirement Living development in Hamble, Southampton, recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary — a remarkable feat that’s made even more remarkable by the fact that they are the second generation of their family to do so .

Daphne (aged 89) and Roy (aged 91) celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary in December having married at the Good Shepheard Church in Romford, Essex, in 1954, while Daphne’s parents, Jessie and Cyril, who were married for 73 years,  celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in October 2000— they were featured in the local newspaper, the Chelmsford Weekly News, at the time.

Daphne says, “It’s wonderful to reach the same milestone as my parents did all those years ago, and to be doing it in the same town makes it extra-special.”

“Marrying the right lady” the secret to wedding milestone

Roy and Daphne met at the Romford Royal British Legion, where Daphne’s dad played the piano, while he was in the Army. After their marriage they moved to Paris before returning to England and settling in Southampton in 1964. They ran the local sweet shop in Woolston, known as “R Forsythe ”, until they retired in 1992.

After retirement, Roy and Daphne moved to Spain, where they lived happily for 26 years before returning to Hamble to be near their three children, six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, many of whom now live in Australia.

Reflecting on their long marriage, Daphne reflects, “We’ve been lucky to live a very active and very happy life, travelling a lot and always enjoying life together.”

The couple finally settled in Folland Court in Hamble in early 2024. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a party in the development’s lounge, enjoyed with family, friends, and fellow Folland Court homeowners.

When asked what their secret was, Daphne replies, “Patience, loving each other and enjoying world trips.” While Roy simply adds, “Marrying the right lady.”
