A green ‘thumbs up’ from guests at our retirement development in Hawkhurst

In partnership with local charity, Hands of Hope, we hosted a spectacular gardening event at our Retirement Living development for the over 60s, Weavers House in Hawkhurst, East Sussex.

Guests keenly listened to tips and tricks on how to successfully grow veggies, herbs, and indoor plants from the expert Hands of Hope horticulturist, before celebrating the official opening of the new homeowners’ potting shed.

Since 2016, Hands of Hope has been working to restore an Edwardian walled garden and 22 adjoining acres off Moor Hill in Hawkhurst. The charity has developed the site into a sustainable, accessible and inclusive community hub, restoring the wall and creating a new community kitchen, learning centre and Victorian glasshouse.

The facilities provide educational and social activities to improve physical and mental health, and tackle food poverty and social isolation. The aim is to provide training opportunities in horticulture and use the natural environment to improve the quality of people’s lives.

Sam Burley, Divisional Sales Director at McCarthy Stone, says, “Our homeowners and their guests had a fantastic time unpicking all things gardening with the experts at Hands of Hope. Many of our homeowners at Weavers House are keen gardeners and therefore enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with nature and learn ways in which they can bring an element of spring to their new home. Gardening has become more than just a simple hobby, it offers a wealth of benefits, from boosting mood and improving brain health to stimulating physical activity, so it’s little wonder why it’s more popular than ever.”
