Volunteering means “I've got some purpose and it's so rewarding."
Wonderful Diana, 93, who lives at a McCarthy & Stone Retirement Living PLUS apartment for the over 70s in the West Midlands has been recognised for her incredible volunteering efforts with an inspirational interview for BBC Radio West Midlands that was played across 40 local radio stations.
Diana volunteers with the charity Bookmark Reading, which matches trained volunteers with primary school children who are struggling to read.
She began volunteering in 2021, following the sad death of her husband in 2019, and has helped dozens of children with their literacy levels.
The volunteering work filled a "huge hole" in her life after the death of her husband. She says, "It's made life worth living - I've got some purpose and it's so rewarding."
Could you become a volunteer for Bookmark Reading?
The charity says that “in England currently more than 1 in 4 children are leaving primary school unable to read well, limiting their potential in the classroom and beyond. These children are more likely to go on to experience unemployment, poor mental health and even a shorter life expectancy.
By fostering a love of reading, we can change the story for children, equipping them with the reading skills they need for a brighter future.”
With demand from schools higher than ever, Bookmark Reading is looking for more volunteers and you can support children face to face or online from the comfort of your home. If you've been inspired by Diana and would like to get involved, you can find out more about volunteering with Bookmark Reading’s volunteering page.
