A community event inspired Mike to make a move

Mike, a Swindon local of 40 years, chose to downsize to Gilbert Place, a Retirement Living PLUS development for the over 70s in the heart of Swindon, Wiltshire, in a move that has brought new vitality and a welcoming community. Having made the daunting transition just 7 months ago, he is delighted by the decision and the enriching experiences it has brought.

Stumbling upon a flyer for an event at the retirement community, Mike was intrigued. He popped along and was suitably impressed by the amenities offered and the attentive sales and management team.

Mike, a former Senior Business Analyst, found that retiring was a milestone that marked the end of a fulfilling professional chapter and the beginning of a new and exciting phase of his life, “I had considered downsizing my home but not truly explored what a retirement development could offer or even what it would be like.

“What began as a casual visit turned into a life-changing move. The warmth of the community and the welcoming atmosphere immediately won me over, and the central location was a bonus as it meant I had everything I could possibly need right on my doorstep”.

Part Exchange made moving significantly easier

Having lived and worked in Swindon for four decades, being able to stay in the local area was one of the most important factors to Mike. He was able to sell his property quickly using McCarthy Stone’s Part Exchange scheme, describing the process as "brilliant" and stating that it “significantly eased the moving process”.

The vibrant social scene at Gilbert Place instantly embraced Mike, leading to many new friendships and connections. Mike commented: “The friendships I've cultivated here are truly special—everyone is so lovely and welcoming. We share stories, laughter, and create wonderful memories together. It's such a joy to be part of this caring and considerate group of individuals”.

Mike has made new friends and found new hobbies

Mike has also been able to reflect on his past sporting life, he used to be a member of the Wey Rowing Club in Surrey and international canoeing enthusiast and coach. He explains: “In my teenage years, I developed a deep passion for canoeing, and it became a defining part of my life. I spent countless hours paddling down the Wey River in Surrey, embracing the thrill of the sport. Canoeing was more than just a hobby—it was a way to challenge myself and connect with nature”.

He continues: "Over the course of 20 years, I not only competed internationally but also had the privilege of coaching aspiring canoeists. It's immensely gratifying to share that passion and knowledge, to see others find the same joy and excitement in the sport.

"Now, at this stage of my life, while I treasure those memories, I'm relieved I no longer have to brave the cold waters. I can reminisce about those days from the cozy comfort of my home whilst enjoying new pastimes that now bring me joy”.

Fast forward and Mike has become a popular member of the new community at Gilbert Place. Despite the toll on his knees from years of canoeing, he actively participates in various activities within the development, including bridge groups and hosting movie nights.

Amenities and assisted living services at Gilbert Place include a bistro serving good food in a sociable environment, bespoke care and lifestyle support, 24 hour staffing, a communal lounge and large landscaped gardens for socialising, parties and events.
