McCarthy Stone, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, has appointed Jonathan Fair as its new Managing Director and Lorraine Paterson as its Sales & Marketing Director to boost its Scottish office.
Jonathan has considerable experience in the housebuilding sector having been Managing Director for Central Scotland at Stewart Milne Homes since 2012, and was previously Chief Executive for Homes for Scotland for almost five years. Based at McCarthy Stone’s Scottish headquarters in Glasgow, he will take full responsibility for implementing the Group’s growth programme in Scotland, including managing its share of McCarthy Stone’s £2.5 billion investment in land and build over the four years to 2019 as well as planning, design and sales. The investment programme is the largest ever of its kind in the UK’s retirement housing sector.
Lorraine Paterson also has a wealth of expertise in the sector, having also previously worked at Stewart Milne Homes in Central Scotland, where she had been Sales & Marketing Director since 2014, and has similar experience from a wide variety of residential, mixed-use and commercial developments.

McCarthy Stone provides the majority of retirement housing built each year in Scotland and there is a growing need for this type of accommodation. Scots aged 65 or over are estimated to increase from 930,000 to 1.47 million by 2037, and those aged 75 or over will almost double to 800,000. Yet there are very few specialist retirement properties in Scotland; just 37,000 units have ever been built, and only 10% are provided for homeowners. Research conducted for McCarthy Stone by YouGov has indicated that over a third (34%) of people aged 65 or over in Scotland are considering a move from their current property.
McCarthy Stone is currently selling from a number of highly desirable locations across Scotland, including at The Limes, Edinburgh, The Hailes, East Lothian and Greenwood Grove, East Renfrewshire.
Lorraine joined McCarthy Stone on 4 January and Jonathan started on 9 January 2017.
