Deciding to downsize can have many triggers. For Nigel Morris, seeing his sister-in-law having to cope with a large house and garden after being suddenly widowed was his trigger, causing him to make the decision that things needed to change to ensure that his wife didn’t have to suffer the same ordeal. 

After having decided to downsize however, finding the right property in the right location and at the right price isn’t always easy. For Nigel and Janice Morris it took over 18 months of them and their daughter searching. But as soon as they saw Scott Place in Lichfield, they knew it was for them.

Nigel Morris comments: “We knew we wanted to live in Lichfield but nothing we saw grabbed us. My daughter spotted Scott Place when it launched and we arranged to take a look. We are 100 yards away from Market Square and all the shops and facilities, and the views from the apartment are fantastic. It’s just perfect as far as we’re concerned!

“We’re opposite the park, with Stowe Pool, which we walk around regularly; in fact we’ve even got healthier since we moved here because of all the exercise we now do! Location is vital when choosing where to live – especially in retirement – and we couldn’t have chosen a better spot. 

“The night before we first visited Scott Place, we popped in to see a friend who was living in McCarthy Stone development in Atherstone. Her apartment was lovely and she was - and is - thoroughly enjoying it there. Her experience helped to show us what we might achieve at Scott Place and we’ve not been disappointed. The quality of the apartment is excellent and we are thoroughly enjoying being part of a community. In fact, we’re currently part of the residents’ team organising a summer barbecue and the Christmas party, and I’m running next week’s quiz night. There’s lots to do.” 

When asked what top tip to give others thinking of downsizing, Nigel advises: “People talk about downsizing to a smaller home or a bungalow, but you’re still on your own. It’s nice to have others around you who are in a similar stage of life who you can chat to and spend time with. We’ve really enjoyed that aspect to Scott Place.
