Colchester retirees enjoyed an afternoon of Military history with a ‘March into March’ event hosted by ABF, the Soldier’s Charity, at McCarthy Stone’sLancer House Retirement Living Plus development.
The team at the development on Butt Road opened its doors to local people for an afternoon of tea, cake and a masterclass covering the history of the Colchester Military in the lead up to the 75th anniversary of VE day later this year.
The afternoon was led by Simon Ferrier, Briefing and Liaison Officer London and East Anglia for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the national charity of the British Army, providing a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families.
As well as meeting residents and guests, Simon talked to attendeesabout the history of Colchester Garrisonover 2000 years. All those who attended the event also had the opportunity to take a tour of the remaining apartments at Lancer House, meet the McCarthy Stone team, and chat with retirees who are already living at the development.
Simon was posted to Colchester as a soldier with 3 Para in September 2000 and was based out of Hyderabad Barracks. He says: “It was a wonderful opportunity to meet local people and chat to them about the military history in Colchester, and commemorate the fantastic men and women that made many sacrifices. I hope guests enjoyed the presentation and learning about the role that Colchester played in the war.”
