The environment we live in has long been associated with our health, and the results of a recent study* analysing over 48 million people have indicated that there is a direct correlation between living closer to the British coastline and self-reported good health.

Although there is no consensus as to why these benefits are felt, theories include that the environment encourages physical activity and helps to alleviate stress. Most interestingly, an experiment conducted by the same body indicated that people even felt more relaxed following a coastal visit than after a similar excursion to a city park – or even the countryside. Testament to these findings, retirees in Tenby are certainly enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of a coastal lifestyle at McCarthy Stone’s Retirement Living development, Paxton Court. One such homeowner is Alma Wingfield, aged 87, who has recently moved in to the development.

Alma explains: “I’ve been active all my life, and have always placed great importance on keeping fit and busy. I’ve played crown green bowling for more than 20 years, and have always been an avid walker. Despite using a walking frame now, the beautiful surroundings of Tenby certainly play a big role in encouraging me to get out and about! I can still walk up to four miles – and I’m determined to keep it that way!”

Exclusively for retirees aged 55 and over, the collection of 36 apartments on White Lion Street have been carefully designed to allow potential purchasers to downsize into a functional and high specification living space, leaving behind the hassles of maintaining a large family home.

Alma adds: “I took the decision to move to a McCarthy Stone development because the maintenance of my previous property had become overwhelming, and I’d noticed that I simply wasn’t able to relax and enjoy my retirement years. The team here at Paxton Court are tremendously helpful, and it’s a weight lifted off my mind to know that I have people here who help us out with the day to day bits that were making life quite tiresome.”

In addition to the new found peace of mind experienced at Paxton Court, Alma has also been enjoying the thriving community spirit that is already well established at the coastal development.

She continues: “I’ve always been very outgoing, and I’m loving being surrounded by likeminded people. I love to see the world around me, and have found a group of friends here who also love to go to the theatre, art galleries, museums and the cinema. The prospect of making new friends was another real draw to McCarthy Stone’s Retirement Living development – and it’s exactly how I’d imagined. I feel like I can truly relax now that I’ve relocated to Paxton Court, and I can finally sit back and watch my grandsons go on to achieve their ambitions and lead happy lives, and really make the most of these fantastic years!”

Tenby is well equipped with a host of local amenities including banks, supermarkets and eateries, as well as a range of independent shops specialising in locally produced items and an indoor market. The town also has a wide cultural offering with attractions such as the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery and the Tudor Merchants House as well as a golf course overlooking the sea. Tenby also enjoys excellent transport links to the M4 motorway network and is well serviced by regular trains to Swansea and London Paddington.

Jacqui Meenan, Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy Stone South West, comments: “At McCarthy Stone, we’re committed to helping older people stay independent for longer. The option of Retirement Living offers the independence of retaining home ownership, while living in a secure, low maintenance and energy efficient apartment.
“What’s more, with the maintenance of all external and communal areas taken care of, homeowners will have more time to spend with family and friends, to really make the most of their retirement.”

Facilities at Paxton Court include a stunning Homeowner’s lounge, ideal for socialising with friends, beautifully landscaped gardens in which to relax, plus a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay. The development also benefits from its very own House Manager, who will ensure the smooth running of the development, a security entrance system, plus 24-hour emergency call points, providing added peace of mind for both homeowners and their families.
