Celebrity International Women's Day
Sunday 8 March is International Women’s Day and we wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the wonderful women at McCarthy Stone, who make up 75% of our workforce – and highlight our ongoing commitment to Equality, Diversion and Inclusion in the workplace.
We are funding 12 new entry apprentices in 2020 in our build division, and are committed to recruiting from a broad range of potential employees, who will rotate through our construction, commercial and development functions. On completion of their apprenticeship, they will be given the opportunity to specialise in their chosen discipline, while completing both a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification
We are mindful of the skills shortage in the construction industry and are actively involved in the Home Builders Federation (HBF) Skills Partnership initiative, including working with women in construction to develop pathways into the industry, providing placements and opportunities to join our apprenticeship programmes.
We now offer enhanced maternity and paternity pay, supporting all parents through this stage of life and enabling them to continue on their career path without such a financial concern.
We have established a women in leadership group to support all women across the business, and also have leadership development training for women available through our L&D offering.
Recently, Lisa Greenwood, our Director of Organisational Development, was ranked in the top 24 female senior managers and the WeQual awards, which recognises the top 24 female senior managers who are direct reports to an executive committee member in a FTSE 250 company.
However, we are delighted that year on year we are seeing an increase in the number of women in Director’s roles across the business.
Over the last 14 months this has included Kathryn Gillard, Group Procurement Director, Alison Nunez, Director of Multi-tenure, Miruna Constantinescu, National Marketing Director, Alison Sarkar, Director of Pricing & Commercial Analytics, and Tracey McDermott's appointment as CTO. We also have Gill Bar leading the CSR initiative on our Board of Directors.
When asked for any advice for women seeking careers in these areas, both Alison and Kath advise “Be yourself, be professional and work hard!”
Women in Construction
Traditionally construction is a male dominated industry, and whilst the number of women working in the UK construction industry is on the up, fewer than 1 in 5 construction workers are female, proving that it is still a male dominated sector. So what are we doing?
We are delighted to have a number of female Assistant Site Managers across our Divisions including Robyn Fisher who is currently in training (LSE), Lisa Hill (SO), and Lexi Kirby (MI).We are funding 12 new entry apprentices in 2020 in our build division, and are committed to recruiting from a broad range of potential employees, who will rotate through our construction, commercial and development functions. Women in Leadership
Research shows that fewer than 10% of Corporate Boards have a female Chair in the UK. Although this is increasing, the issue faced is that there are few women with the experience to take on this position. So what are we doing?
