ATTRACTIONS

Originally a separate burgh from the city, this area is a popular attraction for visitors and tourists alike. You can take a walk around the cobbled streets and marvel at the beautiful historical buildings – some of which date back to the Middle Ages. As well as shopping areas there are also quaint residential cottages and houses, plus the University of Aberdeen situated on one of the main high streets.

Another big draw is the harbour. Here you a find a mix of the old and the new, as the area still operates on a commercial marine level, but it has also seen some regeneration to become a key attraction. A stroll the harbour will take in the best of its 900-year history and you could even book a boat tour to head out into the North Sea for some dolphin spotting.

COMMUNITY

The people of Aberdeen are welcoming and proudly Scottish, which means there are lots of events that happen amongst the communities that celebrate the cultural heritage. This includes the summer Aberdeen Highland Games and the University’s May Festival, as well as the Christmas Markets and Hogmanay Street Party.

The local football team Aberdeen FC is also a focal point for the community and is actively involved in the creation and holding of regular events for people of all ages. However, outside of the sporting world there are several community centres and groups that you can join which offer a variety of classes or gatherings.

St Machar’s Cathedral

SIGHTS

Near our retirement homes in Aberdeen you can find some impressive architecture and one of the best examples of this is St Machar’s Cathedral. Situated in Old Aberdeen, the imposing steeple is a sight to behold, as are the ornate windows and archways of the interior. It has another claim to fame in that some of William Wallace’s remains are said to be housed inside the main walls.

A stone’s throw from the Cathedral is another picturesque sight, namely Seaton Park. This is to the north of the city and has a range of parkland areas including beautiful flowerbeds, a walled garden and a welcoming children’s play area. You can also walk down to the River Don from here and a recently established path can take you from the park out to the city’s main boundary.

Dunnottar Castle - Scotland

SURROUNDING AREAS

Wider Aberdeenshire essentially expands on everything great about the city. There’s historical sites nearby like Dunnotar Castle and even the Scottish home of our Royal Family, Balmoral. You can also head along the north-east coast and can enjoy the Aberdeenshire Coastal Trail. The official route stretches 165 miles and takes in many stunning beaches, coves and cliffs and plenty of interesting examples of Scotland’s wildlife.

If you want to head further afield, there are plenty of transport options for residents in our retirement homes in Aberdeen. The city’s train station for example is connected to the rest of Scotland’s major cities, which can then see you easily travel across the UK. On a local level, Aberdeen is served by regular buses and some of Scotland’s main arterial A roads.
