Things to do in Macclesfield

A jewel in Macclesfield's crown, Capesthorne Hall is a family-owned Jacobean-style stately home set in 100 acres of beautiful Cheshire countryside. Built between 1719 and 1732, the house is open to the public, where you can marvel at its historical paintings, marble sculptures, antique furniture and 16th-century stained glass windows. The grounds also offer a tranquil setting for an afternoon stroll, with three lakes, formal gardens, an icehouse and woodland walks, among the delights.

Fantastic opportunities for outdoor activities abound in Macclesfield Forest and the nearby Teggs Nose Country Park. Both are great for walking, horse riding, cycling and fishing. Macclesfield Forest is also an excellent place for bird watching, with the Peak District's largest heronry at Trentabank Reservoir, and Tegg’s Nose offers stunning views across the Cheshire Plain.

And just a 20-minute drive from Macclesfield is Jodrell Bank, the home of the giant Lovell Telescope. The striking white bowl of this radio telescope can be seen for many miles around! Visit the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre to explore the wonders of the universe and learn more about the workings of the telescope. Jodrell Bank is also the venue of the annual Bluedot Festival, celebrating music, science, art, technology and space exploration.
