Retire to York

With medieval streets, stunning architecture and a wealth of things to do, York is the perfect place to retire

The city of York sits in the heart of the county of Yorkshire and with its many historical buildings, idyllic surroundings and a vibrant centre, is often considered one of the best places to live in the UK. These positive aspects, plus many more like great transport connections and amenities, are all within reach if you move to one of our luxury retirement homes in York.

The areas surrounding our retirement homes in York are not just picturesque, they offer even more in terms of attractions and things to do with family and friends. The fantastic rail connections from York station could see you to nearby Leeds in just half an hour, while London and Edinburgh are equidistant and can be reached in two hours.

In just a short drive you’ll be in the scenic Yorkshire countryside, specifically North Yorkshire where you can visit the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. These impressive landscapes offer everything from rolling hillsides to quaint market towns like Knaresborough and Harrogate.

York Minster is arguably the most famous sight in the city and is the largest cathedral of its kind in the whole of northern Europe. The site where the main buildings stand was originally founded in 314 AD, while construction itself on the magnificent building we see today dates back to the 11th century. The Minster offers daily tours and is still used for worship and graduation ceremonies from the city’s universities.

Second only to the Minster in terms of fame, The Shambles is one of the UK’s best preserved medieval streets with 14th century buildings that sit astride the narrow cobbled walkway. It’s also known for being the inspiration for ‘Diagon Alley’ from the Harry Potter books – one of the many gift shops now found there will pay testament to this fact.

There are plenty of shops and retail outlets near our retirement homes in York.

Parliament Street is a popular hotspot for a little retail therapy, while the York Designer Outlet on the outskirts of the city offers top brands at low prices. Wherever you go you’ll feel welcome and safe thanks to the friendly atmosphere and locals. Whether you’re having an afternoon tea in the famous Bettys, or one of the many award-winning pubs, a good time is guaranteed.

Sometimes known as the ‘City of Festivals’, York has events pretty much every month. There’s York Fashion Week and York Literature Festival as well as the Food and Drink Festival and York Christmas Festival. These are again places where you’ll have fun, but are sure to feel the real community element the city has to offer.

From the ancient City Walls that circle the centre, to the infamous Clifford’s Tower, the National Railway Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre, there are many top attractions in York. The best part is these are mostly family-friendly and make for excellent day trips, so if you have visitors you won’t be short on options.

A visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre will take you on a journey to the past to visit the period in history where Vikings claimed the city as their own. There’s also the York Dungeon, where you can learn about the more gruesome tales of the city from days gone by. Another must-see attraction is the Yorkshire Museum and beautiful surrounding gardens.
