Sights

York Minster is arguably the most famous sight in the city and is the largest cathedral of its kind in the whole of northern Europe. The site where the main buildings stand was originally founded in 314 AD, while construction itself on the magnificent building we see today dates back to the 11th century. The Minster offers daily tours and is still used for worship and graduation ceremonies from the city’s universities.

Second only to the Minster in terms of fame, The Shambles is one of the UK’s best preserved medieval streets with 14th century buildings that sit astride the narrow cobbled walkway. It’s also known for being the inspiration for ‘Diagon Alley’ from the Harry Potter books – one of the many gift shops now found there will pay testament to this fact.

Parliament Street is a popular hotspot for a little retail therapy, while the York Designer Outlet on the outskirts of the city offers top brands at low prices. Attractions

From the ancient City Walls that circle the centre, to the infamous Clifford’s Tower, the National Railway Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre, there are many top attractions in York. The best part is these are mostly family-friendly and make for excellent day trips, so if you have visitors you won’t be short on options.

A visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre will take you on a journey to the past to visit the period in history where Vikings claimed the city as their own. There’s also the York Dungeon, where you can learn about the more gruesome tales of the city from days gone by. Another must-see attraction is the Yorkshire Museum and beautiful surrounding gardens.
