Location is first on the agenda for most people who are looking to move home. But how do you decide on a new city or town? Rightmove have created the annual Happy at Home index which offers a way to help determine a new location. By surveying residents across the UK (in 2018 they asked 21,000 people in 219 locations) they can find the happiest places to live in. And in early 2018, they determined the top five happy spots in the country.

1. Leigh-on-Sea, Essex

For the second year running, Leigh-on-Sea has been crowned the happiest place to live in Great Britain. The bustling seaside town sits on the North Sea coastline, offering residents sandy beaches that are perfect for relaxing on and enjoying British summers.

Based in our north London region, our Billericay Retirement Living and Retirement Living Plus developments are positioned just 11 miles from the centre of Leigh-on-Sea’s, making them ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy relaxing seaside life, without the summer rush.

2. Farnham, Surrey

The second happiest place to live in the UK according to Rightmove is the historic market town, Farnham. Surrounded by greenery and with a network of rivers and streams running through it, it’s a picturesque location that is ideal for anyone wanting to take a break from city living. Nearby castles and period attractions add to the appeal of living close to this town.

Farnham resides in our south-east region and is surrounded by a number of our beautiful Retirement Living and Retirement Living Plus developments.

3. Monmouth, Wales

British love of the Welsh countryside seems to be increasingly popular, with it being a sought-after summer holiday destination or relaxing getaway. Proving its popularity, 2018’s happiest places to live in the UK include Monmouth, a charming town in Wales that is steeped in history. Originally the site of a Roman fort, Monmouth has a rich past including being home to a Bronze Age boat building community and having importance to the early 20th century Navy.

Monmouth is based in McCarthy Stone’s west midlands region and is close to a selection of beautiful properties, cherry-picked for their fantastic location. Our William Grange Retirement Living development is the closest development to Monmouth, positioned just upstream of the River Wye, sharing the area’s historic charm.

4. Christchurch, Dorset

Dorset is high on the wish-lists for many retirees, offering southern beaches, glorious seaside and warmer UK climes that are incredibly popular with holiday-makers. Christchurch, the pretty town in Dorset, reached number four on Rightmove’s list of happiest places to live in the UK, and with plenty of heritage attractions, sleepy countryside and harbour and riverside walks, we’re not surprised as to why!

As part of McCarthy Stone’s Southern region, we have some luxury Retirement Living developments based right on the coastline, and in charming seaside towns. Our Clarendon House development in Poole is 5.8 miles from Christchurch, just west of the town and along the beach.

5. Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

Long sought after for its Regency architecture and Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa is a grand town that offers its residents with plenty of culture and picturesque views. Museums, art galleries and a local history gallery give the town an elegant feel, while the infamous Jephson gardens add to its charm.

Number five in Rightmove's list of happiest places to live in Great Britain, Leamington Spa is based in McCarthy Stone’s west midlands region and is just 10 miles from their Orchard Gate development. Surrounded by lush green fields and countryside, it’s an excellent place to relax and unwind in retirement.
