Living in Hereford

A cathedral city with a friendly market town atmosphere, Hereford provides unspoiled historic architecture surrounded by rolling farmland. The calm clear waters of the River Wye run through its centre, where you can enjoy a relaxing stroll. Hereford Cathedral is one of the city's most spectacular sights. As well as magnificent architecture dating from Norman times onwards, the Hereford Mappa Mundi is also on display in the cathedral - the largest known medieval map depicting the world as it was known to exist around 1300.

Fans of the arts should make a beeline for the Courtyard. Herefordshire's Centre for the Arts, it presents a diverse programme of theatre, film, dance, music and comedy. It also has an award-winning cafe bar set in its grand glass-fronted atrium. If you like the odd tipple, Chase Distillery offers tours from enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guides. Producing a range of vodkas and gins, the distillery grows all of the potatoes and apples it uses at a local Herefordshire farm. Learn about the distillery's processes and enjoy a sample or two at the end of your tour.

To discover more about the day-to-day lives of Hereford's inhabitants in Jacobean times, take a tour of the Black and White House Museum, a remarkably well-preserved example of a 17th century timber-framed building. Surrounded by many of the city's contemporary commercial buildings, this museum is an unexpected gem in the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
