Litter Pickers Donated To Swanland Village Association

Christine Walker, Litter Picking  Coordinator for the Swanland  Village Association organises a team of over 40  volunteers, young and young at heart, who participate in weekly litter pickings  in the centre of Swanland village.

Last month, as part of the Keep Britain Tidy September Clean, a team of around 20 carried out a village-wide litter pick, which they do twice per year, collecting 14 bags of litter in total from the hedges and verges around the village. One volunteer has also collected, over time, a disappointing 145 cigarette butts.

The clean was made possible thanks to a generous donation  of eight new litter picking sets  by leading manager and developer of retirement communities, McCarthy and Stone, which has a development in Swanland  village –  Stapleton Court. This was due to the group needing  more litter pickers in accordance with new covid restrictions, as individuals are no longer able to share equipment or pick in pairs as they would normally to ensure socially distancing.

Christine comments: “The help of our volunteers is integral to keeping the village of Swanland looking clean and tidy and a lovely place to live.

We are so lucky to have so many members that give up their own free time to help. The donation from McCarthy and Stone comes at a key time for the Association as more equipment is needed to make sure we can still carry out our litter picking whilst being covid safe.

It would be such a shame to see our efforts to keep Swanland litter free reduced in anyway, especially as so many more of us are valuing our time outdoors at the moment, and discovering what a joy the countryside can be.”

The litter pickers were presented to the Association by Joanne Harris, Sales Consultant for McCarthy Stone’s Stapleton Court.

Joanne commented: “I first heard about the Association on the Swanland village noticeboard. I called the telephone number to find out if they needed any support as I appreciate that many groups have been suffering from a lack of donations during covid-19 and may need some additional help. We’re pleased we could assist Christine and her team of volunteers who do such a great job in the community to the benefit of us all.”
