Retirement Living in Rye

The local area

Retirement living in Rye, Sussex

Rye is a gorgeous, quintessentially English town in the heart of 1066 country, close to the coast in East Sussex and with a fascinating history—it used to be part of Normandy. That history is evoked all over Rye, with cobbled lanes like Mermaid Street lined with medieval, half-timbered houses. Ypres Tower, built in either the 13th or 14th century, is now Rye Castle Museum, while the redbrick Lamb House was once owned by the writer Henry James. Many writers, including Joseph Conrad and HG Wells have found inspiration in the town.

The cobbled streets are a mecca for shoppers—and foodies—with plentiful independent shops, cafes and restaurants including delis, bookshops, antique shops and artisan gift shops. There are regular markets too, including Brede Farmers’ Market, Local Rye Market and  Beckley Farmers’ and Craft Market, plus annual festivals like the International Jazz and Blues Festival, Senlac Rotary Club's Classic Car Show and the vintage Bus Rally.

Food highlights include The Mermaid Inn, which dates back some 600 years, while Webbe's at the Fish Cafe specialises in very fresh fish. Wine lovers are also in luck with three vineyards in the area —why not take a tour?  Even the cinema, Kino Rye is quirky and independent and situated in a former Victorian library.

As well as all this culture, Rye is perfectly placed for adventures in the great outdoors, with stunning walk, and bird watching at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, boat trips and watersports on tap and, of course, the beautiful sandy beaches and clean seas of Camber Sands just down the road. Our properties for sale in Rye are perfectly placed to enjoy everything this wonderful area has to offer.
