McCarthy & Stone is committed to becoming a dementia-friendly organisation. Our developments and range of services give us a real opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives.

It can be frightening to deal with a diagnosis of dementia. But we are here to support you. We want to see an increased number of people with dementia being able to live longer in their own homes when it is in their interests to do so.

We’re proud to have over 40 Dementia Champions across our service functions, supporting our communities across the width and breadth of England, Wales and Scotland.

Our Dementia Champions say it best:

  • A diagnosis of dementia doesn’t define who someone is or prevent them from continuing to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
  • We’re here to support customers living with dementia, as well as their families and those around them, with understanding, compassion, and confidence. Our aim is to help customers continue to enjoy the independence, comfort and connections that make their community feel like home, while supporting them to maintain their dignity and sense of self for as long as possible.
  • With patience, kindness, and the right support, we can help make a real difference. We create communities where people living with dementia can continue to enjoy life, feel connected to those around them, and be valued, understood, supported and respected.

What exactly is Dementia?

Dementia symptoms are caused by damage to the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but not the only one. Strokes can also be a cause.

Dementia is not one single condition, and its symptoms can present differently in every individual. It can affect memory, thinking, reasoning, communication, and everyday activities, but the way these changes develop and impact someone’s life will be unique to them. Some people may experience memory loss or confusion, while others may have difficulties with communication, decision-making, recognising people or managing daily tasks. Many people continue to live independently and enjoy the things that matter to them, particularly in the early stages.

A dementia diagnosis does not automatically mean someone needs to leave their home. With the right support, practical adaptations and a familiar environment, many people living with dementia can continue to live well and independently for many years. Retirement living is about helping our customers remain safe, comfortable and confident in their apartment and community, with the right support in place as their needs change. Understanding each individual and their unique experience is key to providing the right support, helping them maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life for as long as possible.

Our colleagues are here to support you, your family or your friends.

‘When you’ve met one person with dementia, you’ve met one person with dementia’ - Professor Tom Kitwood

We asked some of our customers who live with dementia to explain why having support is important to them:

How we support you

We’re committed to continually developing our understanding of dementia and how we can best support our customers. Alongside our dementia champions, we offer dementia training for colleagues across all our teams. We’re also continuing to build our knowledge through enhanced trainings such as virtual dementia experiences, helping colleagues better understand what living with dementia can feel like.

We’ve developed new colleague guides to help our colleagues understand what living well with dementia can look like at McCarthy & Stone, alongside our homeowner guide to provide practical information, reassurance and support for you, your friends, and your family. Together, these resources help us create communities where people living with dementia can continue to feel independent, valued, connected and at home.
