What is independent living?

What does independent living mean?

‘Independent senior living’ - it’s likely a term you’ve heard before. But what does it actually mean? Independent senior living enables retirees to live independently in a comfortable, secure, and sociable setting. Essentially you have a private home of your own with reliable support and a welcoming community on hand - along with space and services on the doorstep to make life more enjoyable.

Often, independent living facilities are designed to make everyday living even easier. For example, unlike standard homes - which usually require future-proofing as you age - our retirement properties are ergonomically designed to cater to your needs now, and in the years to come.

You’ll also have access to communal areas, recreational activities, clubs and social events, so you can choose to be as sociable as you like.

What is the difference between independent and assisted living?

While ‘independent living’ and ‘assisted living’ are often used interchangeably, the two terms have very different meanings. The main distinction comes from the level of support that assisted living provides, compared to independent living.

For example, our Retirement Living developments have a House Manager on-site five days a week and a 24-hour emergency call-out system for complete peace of mind.

In contrast, assisted living facilities offer additional services which may be useful if you have health concerns now or in the future - or just want to spend less time on chores. For example, our Retirement Living PLUS developments offer a range of independent lifestyle services such as cleaning, laundry, shopping, and medication management, so you can relax knowing that essential tasks are catered for and a subsidised bistro on-site so you can eat out as often as you please.

What makes independent senior living communities so special?

Independent senior living usually means becoming part of a friendly and supportive community of neighbours. Exclusively for those aged 60 and over, at our Retirement Living developments, you’ll enjoy the privacy of your very own retirement apartment or bungalow, with access to communal areas, such as a lounge and garden, should you wish to socialise - whether that’s an occasional chat or frequent attendance at our on-site social events.
