Laurence Bruce, 92, and Brenda Bruce, 92, were married for 70 years before they decided to move 600 miles from their home in Moray, Scotland, to rent a two-bedroom retirement apartment near their son in Gloucester.
Long-standing couple, Brenda and Laurence, were looking for a flexible lifestyle which could give them the convenience and peace of mind they needed. “We reached the stage where trying to look after a big house and a large garden was too difficult for us. Our son and his wife lived in Gloucester and they helped arrange for us to rent a property here at Llanthony Place.”

“We didn’t consider buying as we thought at the age of 92 we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the new property many years, and didn’t want our family to have the hassle of selling the property. Plus, our pensions allow us to comfortably afford the monthly rent, while preserving our capital.”
Having settled into their two-bedroom apartment and rented for more than a year, Laurence and Brenda reflect on their time at Llanthony Place. “We’ve loved living here. From the moment we moved in – it’s been absolutely excellent. The staff are brilliant and very helpful, particularly the Estate Manager, Matt, who welcomed us. There’s always someone here who can help us in the event of an emergency, which is very comforting to know.”

“We’ve made so many new friends, everyone has been wonderful and made us feel right at home. Llanthony Place is a very sociable community, there’s all sorts of things going on. We have weekly events, entertainment or just meet in the lounge for coffee. For instance, we have visiting acts who provide a two- or three-hours performance once a month. There’s lots of things to do, and we take part in as much as we feel we want to.”

“We have an-hours domestic help - included in our rent, - which we use every week to have help with cleaning the apartment. However, we can utilize it for other chores like shopping or doing the washing, depending on our needs. We haven’t had the need to use the care packages yet, but we anticipate we might have to so at some point, which gives us extra reassurance, as we can ask for extra help if we need to.”
“Moving here has been life changing, but what we’ve loved most is being close to our son and his family. We see them often and it’s comforting to know they’re nearby.”
