Why moving her parents closer was the best decision for Christine and her family

As life expectancy increases and the cost-of-living crisis puts pressure on families, many adult children find themselves responsible for supporting ageing parents. Research indicates that around 6.6 million individuals worry about how to best care for their older relatives. However, many are stepping up to ensure their loved ones enjoy a fulfilling later life.

In Harleston, Christine Rogers encouraged her parents, Julie and Alan Carter, to relocate over 100 miles from Orpington, Greater London. This move has enabled Christine to provide better support as her parents’ mobility has declined.

“It’s made a world of difference,” Christine shares. “My biggest concern was that they lived over two hours away, making visits challenging. During the Covid pandemic, it was especially tough, as we barely saw each other. Now, I can help them whenever they need, and I no longer have to worry constantly about their well-being.”

Creating a supportive environment

Julie and Alan, both in their early 80s, chose to move to Waveney Place Retirement Living development on Mendham Lane, to ease the burden of maintaining a larger home.

Christine explains, “Their mobility was becoming a real concern, and managing the garden was increasingly difficult, particularly without family nearby. I wanted to find them a low-maintenance environment where they could still enjoy the outdoors without the upkeep. Waveney Place was the perfect fit.”

The decision to move was also motivated by the desire for peace of mind. Christine appreciates the supportive community and staff at Waveney Place.

“One of the things I value most is knowing my parents are well looked after. Each resident receives a panic button, which provides great peace of mind for our family. The staff go above and beyond, and the House Manager, Jo, is wonderful in ensuring the comfort of residents. I maintain regular contact with both Jo and Amber, one of the Sales Consultants, so I know my parents are in good hands.”

Alan, a former cabbie, and Julie, who worked with children, have always led active lives, enjoying golf and being ardent supporters of Arsenal Football Club. At Waveney Place, they have continued to embrace this active lifestyle, participating in various community activities.

“It’s heartwarming to see my parents settle into their new life,” Christine reflects. “They’ve made lovely friends and are always involved in something new. They frequently visit the communal lounge for coffee, cake, and chats with other homeowners. They particularly enjoyed when the local primary school choir came to perform. They also love exploring Harleston town centre, where they’ve found their new favourite café.”

Cherishing quality time together

Being close by has allowed Christine to spend more quality time with her parents and their only grandchild. With her brother returning from Australia soon, the family is looking forward to even more cherished moments together.

When discussing the moving process, Christine describes it as “a breeze.” Our sales consultant, Amber, provided exceptional support, helping to sell their property in Kent and arranging viewings at Waveney Place.

“The development is honestly perfect—spacious, safe, and beautifully designed. It’s made a significant difference to my parents’ lives, and their happiness is evident.”

Eager to share the benefits of McCarthy Stone living, Christine frequently speaks with prospective buyers at Waveney Place.

“I can’t recommend the development highly enough; every aspect is brilliant. I often tell visitors how wonderful it is for their loved ones. I’ve seen firsthand what a difference it makes.”

Christine advises those considering retirement living to ask questions, view multiple properties, and attend open day events hosted by McCarthy Stone.

“Since moving here, we haven’t looked back. It’s been a fantastic experience.”
