Five Reasons to Retire to the Coast

With so many great sights and attractions by the coast, it’s no wonder that our recent survey on the UK’s favourite seaside destinations attracted over 2,500 votes.

As part of our survey, many of our respondents also told us that they dreamt of retiring to the seaside and revisiting these gorgeous locations, which many consider to be the best costal places to retire to.

Building on these results, and to help you consider your perfect retirement location, we’ve listed five reasons to retire to the coast.

1. The Coastal Scenery

From Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door down in Dorset right up to Burg on the Isle of Mull, the UK is packed with exquisite coastal scenery that can really take your breath away.

The UK contains over 7,000 miles of coastline, and almost every mile is packed with historical points of interest, stunning geographic formations and picturesque panoramas.

When you retire to one of our coastal retirement properties, you can take your pick from discovering some of the UK’s best hidden beaches, such as Kynance Cove in Cornwall and Oxwich Bay in Wales, or visiting stunning natural landmarks away from the beaten track, such as the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland and Brownsea Island in Dorset.

When you retire to the coast, the world is your oyster and you’ll never tire of the stunning coastal scenery. Plus, if you live in one of our coastal retirement communities, you’ll have no shortage of friends to explore with.

 2. A Variety of Activities

A coastal retirement isn’t all about the sea, and you’ll find a great variety of activities on your doorstep. For example, some of the UK’s best links golf courses are located on the coast, including courses at Carnoustie Golf Links, St Andrews and Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club – all of which have hosted the Open Championship golf tournament.

From sea swimming to coastal path walking and even surfing, when you retire to the coast, your retirement can be as active or as relaxing as you like. Whether you’d rather relax on a stool and fish, take a refreshing morning swim, sunbathe on the sand or even sail a boat, you’ll have plenty of opportunity and no two days will ever be the same.

3. A Great Place for Family Visits

The piers of Southsea, pleasure beaches of Blackpool and ice creams of the coast make it the perfect place for family and friends to visit.

While the younger family members build sand castles and take pony rides, teens can play ball games and their parents can enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation in the sun on a deck chair. After, you can all visit the arcades and enjoy some fish and chips on the seafront.

There’s nothing quite like family time and, when you retire to the coast, every generation of the family can enjoy their time together.

4. Seaside Communities

A coastal retirement can also place you in the heart of a thriving local community. Coastal towns and resorts are often packed with community-led events and festivals that allow you to mix with other retirees and thousands of holidaymakers alike, forging new friendships in the process.

Plus, only a few miles from the coast, you can often find large cities, such as Newcastle, Liverpool and Belfast. Often, the best coastal places to retire to leave you within touching distance of vast urban centres and picturesque coastlines where you’ll find it easy to either make friends or pick up a new hobby. For this reason, our coastal retirement properties often offer retirees the best of both worlds.

5. Fresh and Calming Sea Air

Research shows that the closer you live to the sea, the healthier you are, with the fresh and calming sea air creating the perfect conditions for an active and enjoyable retirement.

Whether you want to stroll along the shoreline, hike up a hill, explore the bays and harbours or trek around one of the UK’s coastal National Parks, you’ll enjoy the health benefits of a coastal retirement.

As well as experiencing the calming sounds of the sea and the tides, by being away from the smoke of the big cities, you’ll feel uplifted, refreshed and rejuvenated by the sea air. Plus, research shows that the negative ions in sea air will also accelerate your body’s ability to store oxygen and balance your serotonin levels, which can make you feel alert, energised or more relaxed.

Plus, our recent Quality of Living Report suggested that our retirement communities can help enrich lives, save money and tackle loneliness in retirement. So, if you like the idea of retiring to the coast, why not take a look at the range of coastal retirement properties we have available or get in touch with your local development to see what they can offer you?
