The thought behind your home

Long before you set foot inside your new apartment every thought and attention to detail has gone into making sure that your needs - both for now and into the future - have been looked after.

With a McCarthy & Stone home you get the reassurance of a company with more than 40 years experience as the UK’s leading retirement builder. Plus the benefits of living in a modern property with a 10 year warranty, within beautifully landscaped grounds, where we take care of the upkeep. Here, Operations Director, David Hockaday, who’s a member of our Product Approval Group panel which oversee development and apartment specification and features, explains more.

It’s all about ergonomically designed living that doesn’t compromise on the aesthetics – in other words, homes where every feature is easy to use, but looks great too.

"Feedback from our homeowners plays a vital role in the thoughtful features you see in a McCarthy & Stone property. A couple of years after each new build I go out and talk to the people actually living with our products to find out what they think works well and where there might be room for improvement. That way, everything we do is permanently evolving – constantly getting better and more intuitive within each new development.

A good example would be the feedback homeowners gave us about storage space in their kitchens – they felt they could do with a little more, and so we commissioned a redesign to provide just that. Some mentioned that the second shelf in their wall cupboards could do with being slightly lower. So, now they are."

Good to know: 90% of our homeowners are pleased with the internal design and layout of their apartments.

"When we look at a design feature the word ‘effortless’ is very much in mind. That means plug sockets at the right heights or an oven where you don’t have to bend down to pull out a hot tray. We constantly look at how well the products and the material we make them with are performing. If something doesn’t work as well as we want it to, then we replace it going forwards. The features that make life better for our homeowners are kept, and improved upon if at all possible. Our apartments are also future-proofed. That means we can continue life’s journey with our homeowners, putting in helpful features as and when they need them, without any great effort or upheaval.

Take bathroom handrails: you might not feel any need for them when you first move in, but it’s good to know that if you become a little unsteady we’ve already put ply behind the bathroom wall. That means we can easily fit them at any height a homeowner might require with minimal disruption. It’s all about ergonomically designed living that doesn’t compromise on the aesthetics – in other words, homes where every feature is easy to use, but looks great too."
