Extra Care explained

What is Extra Care housing?

If you’ve found yourself thinking ‘what does Extra Care mean?’ then let us explain. At an Extra Care property like a Retirement Living PLUS apartment, you will maintain your independence, but can also relax knowing help is available, should you ever need it.

What's the difference between Extra Care and a Care Home?

Unlike living in a care home, at an Extra Care property, you get a secure, self-contained home that you own, rent or part buy per rent. You'll keep your independence as you’ll be living in a beautiful apartment that's been designed with your needs now and in the future in mind: a lift to every floor in the building, switches and appliances conveniently fitted at waist-height, non-slip flooring and grab rails in the bathroom.

Unlike a conventional property in a retirement community – such as a Retirement Living apartment – an Extra Care property gives you a flexible level of personal and/or domestic care that's there if you ever need it. You'll get one hour of help around the house each week included in your service charge, and then it's up to you to decide how much or how little extra care you'd like.

With Extra Care, it’s the little touches that make a big difference. It could be as simple as having someone do your laundry  or it could mean getting extra support for a few days after you get home from a hospital visit. Our flexible service means that you only ever pay for what you need, when you need it.

Who provides care in a Retirement Living PLUS development?

All of the extra care and support you get is provided by our in-house team. This means that all of your care and support is delivered wholly by McCarthy Stone.

We've worked hard to choose the most passionate and caring staff for our care teams, and we've invested in their training to give them all the skills they need to provide you with the best possible service. At Extra Care properties, you’ll always be greeted with a smile and a friendly face. All of our carers are DBS (The Disclosure and Barring Service) certified and YourLife Management Services is regulated by the Care Quality Commission – so you can relax knowing that you're in good hands.

If you like the sound of living as an independent homeowner, but with the added security and peace of mind of help on hand if you need it, start your search for a  Retirement Living PLUS property today.
