Living in Whitby
Famous for fish and chips, Bram Stoker's Dracula and British exploration, Whitby is a thriving seaside town, rich in history. For a rainy-day attraction, the Whitby Jet Museum is an excellent place to visit. You can also visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum to discover more about this world famous explorer, in the very cottage that was believed to have housed him when he lived on land.
As well as its museums and traditional shops, many people travel to Whitby for its food. The town's only traditional smokehouse, Fortune Kippers has been open for over 130 years and has a list of celebrity fans and dedicated shoppers from across the country. There are plenty of fish and chip eateries to choose from too, with the more famous restaurants and cafes attracting large queues at peak times. The Magpie Cafe is perhaps the most sought-after fish and chip destination, offering indoor dining as well as a takeaway options.
Perched on the East Cliff, overlooking the sea is Whitby Abbey. This 7th century Christian monastery became the inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel, 'Dracula' and has since made Whitby the home of the vampire. A walk up to the Abbey is an excellent way to and enjoy beautiful views of Whitby town and the sea.
Residents in this development will also be able to enjoy the picturesque surrounding beaches and countryside, with blue-flag beaches and the Yorkshire Moors all nearby. You can travel south along the coast of Whitby and explore the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, famous for fossils and its striking landscape, including the only Blue Flag Beach in Yorkshire.
