THE LOCAL AREA

Living in Abergavenny

Abergavenny is a truly delightful market town on the Welsh borders. With artsy boutiques, galleries, cafes, tea rooms, gift shops and book stores galore, as well as an annual writing festival and Wales' largest annual food festival, a bustling yet friendly atmosphere characterises this charming town.

Its historic market lies at the heart of the town. Here, as well as a general market held several days a week, flea markets, craft fairs, antiques fairs and artisan markets are held regularly.

In the town you'll also find the small yet beautiful Abergavenny Castle. In the grounds of this Norman ruin is a delightful museum telling the story of this market town, from its prehistory to the modern day.

Abergavenny is also a walker's paradise. The Brecon Beacons serve as a dramatic backdrop to the town, offering 520 square miles of gentle ambling walks, mountain trails and limestone caves, interspersed with quaint Welsh towns, country pubs and Michelin-star restaurants. The Brecon Beacons are also home to South Wales' highest mountain, Pen y Fan. What's more, to the north of the town lie the Black Mountains. These grassy red sandstone hills dappled with heather and intersected by meandering rivers offer excellent opportunities for walkers, cyclists, mountain bikers and horse riders alike.

And in the nearby town of Blaenafon is the Big Pit National Coal Museum. Visit this fascinating award-winning museum for a taster of what being a miner here was like. Take the underground tour, descending 300 feet below the surface, to follow in the footsteps of miners past and learn more about the coal industry in Wales.
