Newmarket is the birthplace and capital of thoroughbred horse racing, and is home to over 3,000 horses, 50 training stables and two of the most exclusive and prestigious racetracks in the world. The town is also a favourite amongst the royal family – Queen Elizabeth regularly visits to watch the horses in training, while Charles I, Charles II and several other monarchs have all lived in Newmarket.
Horses aside, Newmarket is a very pretty market town and is often considered one of the most unique and picturesque spots in England. The town itself is set out in medieval style, with many beautiful buildings, churches and wide open parks. Located on the border of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, the entire area surrounding Newmarket is known for its outstanding natural beauty. For a day out, Cambridge is just 12 miles east of the town, and London is a 1.5 hour drive away.
