A bowls club in Eastleigh has received a £400 boost towards the re-launch of a tournament in memory of one of its late members. The team behind the Retirement Living Plus development, May Tree Place on Banister Road, donated the money to Banister Park Bowling Club on Stoneham Lane as part of its commitment to create a positive legacy in the community.

The £400 donation was used towards the setup of the tournament, helping to provide food and drink for players throughout the day, as well as trophies and awards for the winning team.

As joint sponsors of the event, McCarthy Stone presented the cheque at the bowling club’s recent tournament in memory of former member and club president, Bob Kirton.

The Bob Kirton Memorial Trophy was first created shortly after Bob’s passing in 2019. However, due to the pandemic, the tournament had temporarily been put on hold. At that time, Bob’s family had also donated a sum of money which was used to purchase several benches to sit alongside the outdoor rinks in his memory.

Now more than four years later, Banister Park Bowling Club, in partnership with McCarthy Stone, has been able to make the tournament a reality. On the day, bowlers went head-to-head in an open mixed fours tournament as they tried to take home a trophy and a monetary prize. There was also a slew of fun games for guests to take part in, along with a delicious ploughman’s lunch.

Established more than 100 years ago, Banister Park Bowling Club is proudly home to over 400 members, many of whom compete in multiple Southampton and District leagues, as well as Hampshire leagues throughout the indoor winter season and outdoor summer season.

Ashley North, Social and Sponsorship Director, comments: “On behalf of Banister Park Bowling Club, I want to say a huge thank you to McCarthy Stone for their generous support. It’s thanks to these kinds of donations that we can deliver fun and engaging events, such as the Bob Kirton Memorial Trophy, and maintain our facilities to a high standard so we can deliver a fantastic member experience. Together with the support of others, we want to continue to provide an inclusive and friendly meeting place for local people to pursue their love of bowls – or more simply, enjoy good company.”

Verity McKay, Divisional Marketing Manager at McCarthy Stone, added: “An important part of what we do here at McCarthy Stone is support local activities and initiatives in the towns and communities in which we build to help create a lasting, positive legacy. Therefore, we’re delighted to lend our support to Banister Park Bowling Club and to have been a part of their special event.”
