Retirement homes in Yorkshire

World-class heritage sites, inspiring landscapes and a proud collection of communities and cultures – there might be no better place to start your next episode than in ‘God's Own County’.

Breath-taking beauty in the North of England

If there's one thing there's plenty of in the huge span of Yorkshire, its rolling green hills and peaceful meadows. From the National Park at the North York Moors to the valleys and patchwork fields of the Yorkshire Dales, you could find yourself retiring into one of the most scenic parts in the country.
You'll also find a massive stretch of unspoilt coastline, including 36 miles of Heritage Coast, running from Saltburn down to Scarborough. There are sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, rocky shores and profound views – including the one from Boulby, the highest point on the east coast of England.

Uncover a rich heritage

Spanning the Celtics, Romans, Vikings, Normans and the Tudors, Yorkshire has a vast and deep history to explore. There are more than 40 castles and abbeys all over the county, and 7 different cathedrals – as well as a huge number of museums, covering everything from historic railways to landmark battlefields.

You can tour stately homes and their stunning gardens, visit the iconic Yorkshire coal mines, or bring the family to the country's oldest seaside resort at Scarborough.

Make the most of an active retirement

Yorkshire's home to over 200 golf courses and tennis clubs, as well as many rural pursuits that you might not find elsewhere. Take a leisurely horse ride through the Yorkshire Dales National Park, or try out some fly fishing and clay pigeon shooting at the Coniston Estate near Skipton. It's also a region that's famous for its horse racing, with nine different race courses, and it hosts some of the most famous racing festivals in the UK.

For exciting nights out, there's plenty to see around the county. There's opera and ballet at the Grand Theatre in Leeds, or you can catch live music, comedy and family productions at Europe's largest open-air theatre in Scarborough. There are also a huge number of festivals taking place throughout the year, such as the Ilkley Literature Festival, the Hull International Photography Festival, or the York Early Music Festival.

If you like the sound of bustling cities, green valleys and a little Northern hospitality, see if one of our impressive retirement homes is a good fit for your new adventure:

My son wanted me to move a bit closer to where he lives, so I was easily persuaded. I was a little bit worried about some parts of the move, but McCarthy & Stone’s Smooth Move service made it so easy for me, I had signed within a fortnight!
