Local area
Garstang is proud of its heritage. As well as being mentioned in the Domesday Book (as Cherestanc), there has been a weekly market held in Garstang since 1310, which still runs to this day. Head to the High Street on Thursdays to find a wide range of stalls selling everything from books to plants and household goods to children’s clothing. What’s more, at Market House, browse stalls selling a wide range of local produce, from meats and cheeses to vegetables and confectionery.
Another of the town’s accolades is that it was the world’s first Fair Trade Town. A testament to the local community, in 2001, the mayor, all of the town’s schools and faith groups and 95% of all businesses in Garstang signed a pledge to buy and use Fair Trade and local produce. Now, following in Garstang’s footsteps, there are 2167 Fair Trade Towns around the world and counting – no small achievement for a humble Lancashire community.
What’s more, the Forest of Bowland sits on Garstang’s doorstep. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there is so much to do and see here, from the impressive castle at Hornby to the wide expanses of the Beacon Fell Country Park.
It is also home to the iconic Trough of Bowland, one of the most well-known stretches of countryside in Lancashire, and the circular walk known as the ‘Tolkien Trail’, which guides walkers through the landscapes that inspired the author during his regular visits here. Plus, for the foodies among you, the Inn at Whitewell isn’t one to be missed – as well as having won multiple awards, this hotel and restaurant was featured on The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.
