THE LOCAL AREA

Living in Beccles

Beccles is known locally for its historic buildings and its strong community spirit. The town's centre is only a short walk away from our development of retirement bungalows in Beccles. Here, not only will you find the famous market square, but you'll also discover a range of independent stores, as well as local shops, cafes and restaurants.

The town of Beccles was once a flourishing Saxon sea port, which means that there's also plenty to offer those interested in history. As well as a number of Grade I listed buildings, the town is home to the Beccles Museum and a 97 ft. Bell Tower, which is also available for guided tours.

Just outside of the town centre, you'll also find the River Waveney, which is the perfect place to go for a stroll. If you're looking for something a little more active (or for a more unique way of exploring your surroundings), then you can also hire a boat or canoe. Should you prefer to relax in style, you can also hire a skippered boat.

In addition, the River Waveney also acts as the focal point for many of the town's community events, such as the Duck Race, the Late Night Christmas Event and Beccles Carnival, which is the town's largest community gathering.

During the summer months, Beccles Lido is also a popular meeting point and place to watch the world go by. As well as being home to a heated outdoor swimming pool, the lido also has plenty of paved and grassy areas that are popular with families.

Travelling beyond Beccles is simple, too. The A146 passes the town, making it easy to reach Norwich or Lowestoft by car from our development of retirement bungalows in Beccles. For local transport options, a number of bus routes connect Beccles with surrounding villages such as Worlingham and Gillingham. The town is also served by Beccles Railway Station, which is on the East Suffolk Line between Ipswich and Lowestoft.
