Things to do in Coventry, West Midlands
Recently listed as one of prettiest cities in the UK, Coventry mixes medieval roots with striking modernity and is known as the City of Three Spires —a reference to the spires of Christchurch, St. Michael's and Holy Trinity.
It also boasts an impressive new cathedral which combines a stunning contemporary design with the ruins of the former medieval cathedral which was bombed in the Second World War. Another gem that survived the blitz is St Mary’s Guildhall. This beautiful building has housed the crown jewels, imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots and hosted George Eliot and is a fantastic place to visit. There’s even more culture at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, while Coventry Transport Museum and The British Motor Museum in Warwick, pay homage the area’s motoring heritage. The site of the former Daimler factory, Daimler Green is half a mile from our new shared ownership homes in Coventry.
As well as history and culture, central Coventry is packed with shopping and eateries including all the big name brands. Fitness fans are well catered for in the city with plentiful leisure facilities including bowling, swimming and golf at Coventry Golf Club.
Despite its urban feel, there’s lots of natural beauty to be found within Coventry and it is encircled by countryside. Lady Herbert’s Garden offers a tranquil spot in the centre, Coventry Canal Basin is packed with wildlife, while the green acres of Coombe Abbey Park and Allesley Park are lovely places to walk. Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve is the headquarters of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and is brilliant for birdwatching.
Coventry has excellent transport links to vibrant Birmingham, which can be reached in half an hour, as well as Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon and the surrounding West Midlands. With so much on offer, Coventry is a truly rewarding place to spend your retirement.
