Retirement Living a year on with McCarthy & Stone at Anstie Court
19 February 2015
Twelve years ago my wife and I bought a new house on the outskirts of Devizes. It was a fairly spacious four bedroom house with two garages and a modest area of land for a garden. It was a pleasant house to live in but inevitably, with the passing years, its maintenance became too much for us. McCarthy & Stone had successfully bought the site and had started to build a complex of 37 apartments for “retirement living.”
This, for us, was quite fortuitous because we had realised that we would have to downsize. A presentation of Anstie Court development was held at a local hotel and we decided to register our interest in a two bedroom apartment with a balcony overlooking the Devizes canal. The apartment was spacious on a pleasant site adjacent to a car park and near to the town centre.
Fortunately we were able to sell our house quickly and the solicitor who acted on our behalf, had been extremely helpful and had promptly dealt with the conveyance and the completion date was set for the 27th December, 2013.
We have now been in our apartment for over a year and have much to be pleased about. It is inevitable that in a new property snags will arise but generally these were dealt with very promptly. When we moved here there were plenty of workmen around finishing off the other apartments and they were gems. They volunteered immediately to move any heavy furniture we wished to locate in a changed position and even wired and hung our electrical fittings.
What has it been like living in a building with over fifty other homeowners? Well, although the House Manager did much to foster the community spirit, those wishing to remain more private were completely free to do so. On Mondays, the rest of us enjoy a coffee morning, afternoon tea and cakes is served on Thursdays and twice a month there is a film evening. A younger married couple organise a fish and chip supper once a month, which has proven to be very popular.
My wife and I have been extremely lucky to be able to stay in Devizes where, over the years we have made many friends. It is also pleasant to be able to stroll into the town centre for the shops, restaurants, cinema and when necessary, the doctors’ surgery.
Don't miss your last chance to buy at this beautiful canal side development. With just one apartment remaining, Anstie Court has proven to be in popular demand.
