Why it’s never too late to give yoga a try

21 August 2013

Yesterday the homeowners of Thwaytes Court Herne Bay, enjoyed a gentle introduction to the delights of yoga with local instructor Abbey Careford.

For the majority of the group, it was their first experience, and judging by their smiles at the end, it certainly won’t be their last. The group got to grips with various breathing and posture exercises at a lightening pace. Check out these photos to view them in action.

As the balmy sea air came through the patio doors, Abbey was on-hand to guide residents through the basic principles of what yoga involves - balancing the mind, body and spirit.

So why is yoga good for you?

Here’s five reasons why it’s never too late to give yoga a try:

  1. It lowers stress and improves your mood!
Some yoga methods use specific meditation techniques to focus the mind on your breathing that quietens the constant 'mind chatter', relieves stress and allows you to feel relaxed. Practising yoga can also boost oxygen levels to the brain, leaving you feeling happier and more content with everyday life.
  2. It increases flexibility and helps stiffness
If you can’t touch your toes then yoga is for you. The truth is it doesn't matter how tight your muscles are, as yoga works by stretching your muscles and also stretches other soft tissue in the body such as ligaments and tendons, increasing the range of motion in the joints and allowing you to move around more freely.
  3. It improves your posture
By practising yoga you will become more flexible and improve your muscle tone and strength, thus improving your posture.  The abdominals and back muscles can now fully support your weight and you will be able to sit and stand tall, preventing niggling injuries, aches and pains.
  4. It boosts confidence
Aside from the uplifting spiritual values, the act of meditation can actually boost your confidence. The process works by releasing tension from your mind so you can feel confident about your physical body. Without any forms of anxiety, you are able to establish an internal connection with yourself.
  5. It helps you lose weight
One major contributor to weight gain is stress. By practising yoga and teaching your body how to relax, yoga will help you to de-stress allowing you to lose weight naturally.

Elizabeth, a homeowner at Thwaytes Court commented straight after the session:

“It was excellent, I feel great and I’m ready for my next holiday.”

Elizabeth and her husband love to travel and they told me that their McCarthy & Stone apartment allowed them do what they love best; when the swallows head for warmer climes, they do too!

Thwaytes Court is located on the north Kent coast and has a wonderful community sprit amongst the homeowners.  House Manager Simon, reeled off a long list of activities that the residents participate in. The homeowners are always open to new ideas and love an excuse to get-together and enjoy themselves.  There are regular games and quiz nights in the communal lounge, as well as classes at the local leisure centre, and with the award winning beach a five minute walk away, walks along the promenade are a must!

For more information on Thwaytes Court, and retiring to the seaside town of Herne Bay get in touch with Carole Careford or Katie Savolainen.
