60 second interview with Claridge House's Estates Manager

19 November 2012

As part of our 'day in the life' of a retirement development at Claridge House we caught up with Julie Howard, the Estates Manager.

Q. How long have you worked in the care sector?

27 years

Q. How long have you worked for McCarthy & Stone?

I have been working for McCarthy & Stone since July 2011

Q. What attracted you to a career in care?

My mother thought we should open up a care home in 1985 so with my father we went into business and I’ve never looked back. I guess I have found my forte in life.

Q. Tell us about your first job?

I am a qualified Nursery Nurse so my first job was teaching the Vietnamese refugee children how to play and speak English. I then went on to work as a governess for a professional family and their son in America.

Being a Qualified Registered Care Manager my work in residential care for 27 years has been very fruitful and fulfilling and I can honestly say I wake up every morning always happy to go to work.

People inspire me with their life history and how they have coped with life. They have so much history and knowledge to pass on I don’t have time to get bored, I am very passionate about my work.

Q. What do you most enjoy about your job as an Estates Manager?

I love a challenge. The Homeowners, the staff and managing the development so you could say I love all of it.

Watching all the homeowners blossom whilst they all realise that one window has closed and another one opens and their life just got better.

Q. What do you like to do in your spare time?

  • Ballroom dancing
  • Gym/Swimming/Walking/Cycling
  • Spending time with my 4 children including girlie shops!!!
  • Socialising
