Wilton couple blissfully sailing through retirement

14 September 2017

From setting sail across the channel in their very own sailing boat, to enjoying many adventures exploring the English countryside, Richard (70) and Rachel (69) Barton, have always enjoyed living life to the full. The couple are embracing their retirement with more time to spend on activities and holidays they enjoy, and are delighted to now call Olivier Place in Wilton, their home.

The couple, who had lived in Salisbury for over twenty years, took early retirement aged 50 and had been planning to downsize for some time when they saw that Wilton would be getting a new retirement development.

Richard’s lifelong passion of sailing has seen the couple set sail across the channel more than 60 times, in their very own sailing boat which they had for over 21 years. Richard used his passion to occupy his time in early retirement, and worked as a part-time sailing instructor for ten years at Southern Sailing.

Richard says: “Sailing is a real passion of mine and always has been. There’s something very special about being out there in the wide open sea with the fresh air biting your face, and the crashing of the waves – it’s very peaceful and it’s where I feel most relaxed. It’s also been a real pleasure to now be able to share this with my wife. For us, it’s all about making memories and where our next adventure will take us!”

After many years of sailing the seas, the couple decided to sell the sailing boat and enjoy holidays at a more leisurely pace. Having visited the picturesque town of St. Ives earlier this year, Richard and Rachel are busy planning their next holiday to Jersey, and are looking forward to exploring more of the UK in coming years.

The couple have had a fantastic first summer in their brand new apartment at Olivier Place on Hart Close in Wilton, and settled into their new home right away. Rachel said: “We were both really looking forward to moving to Olivier Place, and the first couple of weeks at the development felt like we were living in a five star hotel – it was amazing! We love having our own balcony and spend a lot of time out there enjoying the picturesque surroundings.”

She continues: “We had always said we would downsize before we were 75, so that we could enjoy our retirement freely and to the fullest. Our house was beginning to need a lot of work and money put into it, especially externally, so we were absolutely delighted when we saw in our local estate agents that a retirement development would be coming to Wilton - an area we are both very fond of.

“One of the reasons we were attracted to the development, as well as the location, was because it offered us the peace of mind of being able to leave the apartment for holidays without having to worry about security. This was especially important to us after an attempted burglary at our previous home while we were away.”

Richard and Rachel are also making the most of the thriving social community that has formed at Olivier Place. Richard comments: “We like to get involved in all of the activities, especially the film nights and coffee mornings. The events are a great way to socialise and get to know the other homeowners, who are all really friendly, and we attended events before we’d moved to the development. We are looking forward to spending our first winter here, and getting involved in all of the events in the run up to Christmas.”

Tony Hodge, House Manager at Olivier Place, commented: ‘"It's an incredibly rewarding part of our job when we hear how happy our homeowners are, so it's great to hear that Richard and Rachel are enjoying their new surroundings and feeling at home at Olivier Place. McCarthy and Stone helps retirees to spend more time doing the things they enjoy and Richard and Rachel certainly demonstrate this with their active lifestyle and holidays. For them, Retirement Living is the perfect solution. It offers the independence of home ownership combined with the peace of mind of additional security and knowing all the external maintenance is taken care of by an expert team.”

Olivier Place features a stylish collection of 39 one and two bedroom apartments, and includes a stunning homeowners’ lounge, ideal for socialising with friends, landscaped gardens fully maintained by a team of professionals, plus a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay. A dedicated House Manager takes care of the day-to-day running of the development; and a security entrance system and 24-hour emergency call points provide homeowners and their families with additional peace of mind.

Olivier Place has proved to be a roaring success, with the development now fully reserved. To find out more about Retirement Living at McCarthy and Stone, and other developments nearby, please call 0800 201 4847 or click here.
