Welcome boost from local housebuilder for Hamble Good Neighbours

10 January 2018

McCarthy and Stone, the housebuilder behind the Folland Court Retirement Living development on Hamble Lane, has donated £500 to local charity Hamble Good Neighbours.

Hamble Good Neighbours is a volunteer-led service which offers people a helping hand in their local community. The scheme provides local residents, elderly or disabled, with trips to hospital or dentist appointments and gives people a mode of transport who are unable to get there by other means. This vital service relies on volunteer drivers giving up their own time to facilitate trips throughout the day, and currently there is more demand than there are volunteers in Hamble.

McCarthy and Stone were made aware of the service after a positive referral from one of its homeowners who was familiar with the good work of its volunteers in the community. It is thought that the donation from McCarthy and Stone will help to raise Hamble Good Neighbour’s profile locally and encourage more volunteers in the area to get involved.

Hamble Good Neighbours relies on its dedicated volunteers, and two volunteers in particular were recognised for their contributions. Claude New and Tony Neve have volunteered for the charity for over 25 years. They frequently sit and wait with each person (sometimes for hours) for their appointments at the hospital. They are well-known for even getting them a drink and something to eat, if it’s been a particularly long wait. McCarthy and Stone hopes to encourage more people to volunteer for the charity just like Claude and Tony who have become real assets to the team.

Rick Hull, Chairman of Hamble Good Neighbours and Cathy White, Coordinator at Hamble Good Neighbours, joined Lauren McKell the House Manager and Sales Executive Malcolm Harvey from McCarthy and Stone to receive a cheque for £500 at Folland Court.

Rick Hull, commented: “Good Neighbours is extremely grateful to McCarthy and Stone for this donation which will help us continue our valuable work supporting older people living independently in Hamble.  We are constantly looking for ways to collaborate with local businesses and we are delighted to be associated with a leading retirement housebuilder. We are assisted in our work by a team of magnificent volunteers from all walks of life, we would not exist without our volunteers, and we are so grateful for all their time and efforts.”

Malcolm Harvey, Sales Executive for McCarthy and Stone Southern, added: “As a company, we appreciate that our responsibility is not only to build quality, purpose-built retirement properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build. Hamble Good Neighbours do such a superb job in the area and we are delighted to be able to donate to such a worthy cause.”

Exclusively designed for those aged 60 and over, the stunning collection of 26 apartments at Folland Court has seen a high level of interest since its launch last year from local retirees, so much so that there are now just four apartments remaining. The development offers the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, with the opportunity to enjoy companionship and social activities if homeowners choose to, or to enjoy the privacy of their own home if they prefer.
