Turner House gives local retiree new joie de vivre

05 July 2017

Midhurst retiree Alan Buck found a new enthusiasm for life after making McCarthy and Stone’s Turner House his home. Since settling into his Retirement Living apartment, the 73-year-old feels his life has been transformed with friendship and happiness.

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living developments are carefully designed to offer homeowners the very best in independent living within a safe and secure environment, with the opportunity to benefit from companionship when desired, as well as privacy when needed.

After relocating from nearby village Billingshurst, Alan candidly explains: “I was living on my own, I didn’t have many friends or family around me, so coming to Turner House has changed me no end. I have a completely new life now, I’ve been here for two years, since the first day it opened. We are all very close, it’s a tight community, more or less like a family, we all help one another and get on extremely well. I am so glad I moved here, I feel very, very thankful for it.”

The social side of Retirement Living and being surrounded by new-found friends is one of the elements Alan enjoys most about life at Turner House. Homeowners are able to relax in the luxurious club lounge, a comfortable communal area ideal for socialising with friends and neighbours, as well as the development’s beautiful landscaped gardens.

Talking about this, Alan comments: “We have various games nights, Scrabble on Mondays and Rummy club every Saturday. Once a fortnight on a Wednesday we have DVD night.  The ladies pick the film, usually a romance or Rom-Com. Then once a month, on a Friday, we have a Fish n Chip supper and watch movies for men, so a Western, Thriller or Spy. We share a few glasses of wine, and cheese and biscuits.

“We also organise trips out to our local theatre in Chichester or to visit nearby gardens. Recently we arranged a day out on a canal barge followed by dinner at the local pub. Many of us go walking with the local walking group and I play golf once a week with a friend from the development.”

Understanding the importance of companionship in later years McCarthy and Stone organise 40,000 social activities each year for their homeowners up and down the country, with at least three organised activities per development each week.

“This is a wonderful place, everyone here has settled in really well,” continues Alan. “We all get on tremendously well and have a laugh together. It’s very much like a family atmosphere. We sit outside in the garden area, talking about life, our memories.  If it’s nice in the evening we’ll do our games club outside.”

Like many retirees, Alan decided it was time to downsize and spend less time worrying about the upkeep of his three bedroomed bungalow with a sizeable garden. Talking about the decision, he said: “Of course I worried if I was making the right decision as I lived on my own for a long time, but I definitely did make the right choice. Straight away I liked the spaciousness of my apartment, which has plenty of light; and the walk to the town is not very far, which is perfect. It’s also nice and quiet around here. I walk into town every day, which takes less than ten minutes.”

Exclusively for over 60s, Turner House provides everything homeowners could want for a relaxing and enjoyable retirement. The development has proven to be incredibly popular with over 90 per cent of apartments sold already. The remaining two bedroom apartments available are priced from £378,950.

Alan concludes: “I’m so glad I made the move when I did, it’s like starting a brand new life, but with people in your same age group. We can reminisce and we all understand each other.”

Julie Ward, Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone South East, commented: "It's an incredibly rewarding part of our job when we hear how happy our homeowners are, so it's great to hear that Alan is enjoying his new lifestyle at Turner House. McCarthy and Stone helps retirees to spend more time doing the things they enjoy and Alan certainly demonstrates this with all the social activities he’s enjoying with fellow homeowners. It gives us a sense of great satisfaction when we see homeowners settle-in to their new lifestyle quickly and to start reaping the many benefits of Retirement Living.”

Turner House consists of an attractive selection of 32 one and two bedroom Retirement Living apartments, each with intelligently-designed modern interiors and spacious master bedrooms with en-suites. Homeowners can make the most of the beautiful landscaped gardens, knowing all the external maintenance is taken care of.  They can also feel secure in the knowledge that Trudy, the Concierge is on hand to provide any help or support should they need it; and that friends and family can stay over whenever they choose in the development’s comfortable guest suite.
